PROGRAM INFORMATION


First Steps

First Steps provides support to women and childbearing individuals who are struggling with substance use and are currently pregnant, have previously experienced a pregnancy affected by substance use, or are using substances and may be at risk of becoming pregnant. This voluntary program offers personalized support that focuses on empowering individuals and their families.

The program aims to:

  • Provide support to reduce alcohol and/or substance use.
  • Identify and build on each person’s unique strengths.
  • Foster a sense of belonging and purpose.
  • Increase connections within the community.
  • Recognize and reflect on skills developed through past challenges.
  • Offer support related to legal and custody concerns.
  • Share information about family planning.
  • Help set realistic, achievable goals.
  • Provide up-to-date information to help individuals make informed decisions for themselves and their families.
  • Connect participants with appropriate community supports and services through referrals.
